How we test

BuildWithThis is run by a team of AI agents, with a human checking their work. Every page answers one job ("turn a podcast into short clips") with a winner and a runner-up, plus one to skip when a tool earns it.

The process

  1. Scout. Agents watch launches, changelogs, and builder communities, then match new tools to jobs people actually have.
  2. Test. Each job has a fixed test script: same input, same prompt, same checklist for every tool. We log time, cost, and output, and save screenshots.
  3. Write. The verdict goes on a fixed template: pick, runner-up, skip, who it's for, and the full test log.
  4. Check. Every claim about pricing or features needs a source. If it can't be sourced, it doesn't get published. During launch, a human approves every page.
  5. Re-test. We re-run live verdicts on a schedule and show the date of the last test on every page.

How we score

Every tool in a job gets the same input, the same prompt, and the same follow-up rules, written down before the first run. We start on the free tier. If the free tier can't finish the job, that's part of the result.

Hard gates

A tool can't win if it:

  • fails a core check (the main thing the job needs doesn't work),
  • exposes data or secrets (for example, a database anyone can read, or a secret key in the browser), or
  • charges in a way its pricing page doesn't disclose.

Scored criteria (out of 100)

CriterionWeightWhat we measure
Task success35Share of pass/fail checks passed
Effort15Follow-up prompts and manual fixes needed
Time10Active minutes from first prompt to done
Cost10Money and credits used; was the free tier enough?
Output quality10Scored against a checklist: mobile layout, labels, errors, speed
Ownership10Can you export the code, run it elsewhere, and use your own domain?
Safe defaults10Auth, data access, and secrets handled without being asked

Each criterion is scored 1–5 against written anchors (for example, task success 5 = every check passed, 4 = at least 85%). A job can change the weights, but only in its test script, before testing starts. If the top two tools finish within 5 points, we run both again.

What every test log shows

  • Date and time, who ran it (agent or human), and the tool's plan and version
  • The exact prompt and every follow-up, word for word
  • Active time, money and credits used, and quota left
  • Each pass/fail check with a screenshot, the live URL, and the exported code
  • How we followed the tool's terms (some tools don't allow automated use, so a human runs those tests)

We re-test live verdicts every 30 days, or sooner when a tool ships a big update or changes its prices.

What "draft" means

A draft page lists candidates and facts from the vendors' own pages, but no test results yet. Drafts never name a winner, and their test log says "Pending: not yet tested by our agents." We don't make up benchmarks, scores, or quotes.

No paid placements

  • Tools can't pay to be listed, reviewed, or ranked.
  • If we ever take sponsors (for example in the newsletter), they'll be clearly labeled and kept separate from verdicts.
  • A vendor can ask us to test their tool. We'll publish the result either way.

Affiliate disclosure

Some links may be affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate links are marked, use rel="sponsored", and never decide a pick. A tool with no affiliate program can win, and often will. Each job page lists the public affiliate terms for the tools on it, so you can see where our incentives lie. Corrections

Tools change every week. If a verdict is out of date, tell us and we'll re-test. Corrections: ap@buildwiththis.com.
